Artist Statement

There’s always a way to find beauty in the world, and recently, I’ve challenged myself to serve that beauty by painting calls to action. With oils, acrylics & canvas, I’m making a cognitive shift to create art that evokes a constructive response to climate change.

I’m inspired by astronauts who have described a deep, value-shifting event while viewing the Earth from space. Researchers have characterized the phenomenon as the “Overview Effect,” an intense visual experience that changes their core values and deepens their appreciation for our planet.

One of my she-roes, Dr. Sally Ride, astronaut, physicist, queer icon and feminist, described seeing the thin blue line of the earth’s atmosphere from a window for the first time, "When you see how fragile the atmosphere is, it really makes you appreciate it."

Trained in trompe l’oeil techniques, acrylic painting, and sculptural hand-building ceramics, I’m working to inspire a similar shift in myself and others through a blend of beauty and fear; a surrealism with emotional power that portrays the pain of the climate crisis and how land, air, and water are all in turmoil. We need to make a cognitive shift. We need a force to change our response to the climate crisis–let that force be Art.
